that the back of the 500 abarth is really unfortunate looking. Its really strangely proportioned and dumpy looking in real life, like a snow monster turd with taillights.

I find that it tries to be angry in its own cute way, and it works well for it.

I don’t really like the looks of the 500 from any angle. Yet it does look kind of cute in an odd way.

Combine cute with dat power and dat tiny size and dat noise and dat handling and I don't really care how odd it looks.

its not the additional stuff that makes it weird, its that the taillights are too small for the body and placed really low. Its hard to see in the image but in real like it just looks like a mess.

I dig it from all angles but the back. The back isn’t bad because its funky (like the rest of the car) the back is bad cause it looks lazy and half done. A lot like the old traverse

The entire 500 line is ugly as shit and getting worse over time (the L? Seriously?)

Its only saving grace is its nostalgia to the original 500, which should be nonexistent to most Americans. I’m struggling to see how they sell outside of large city centers.

This is the weakest part of what is otherwise a great looking car, and it’s a really weak one, but really, that’s what happens when you do a retro-modern front-engined version of a rear-engined car.

The original New Beetle (not the original Beetle nor the one they sell now but the one before that Jesus that’s confusing) was fantastic except for how they had to give it roughly 73 miles of dash and move the interior back accordingly to accomodate an engine in the front while still preserving the silouette, making it look great until you noticed how everything inside the car appeared to have been piled onto the back seat.

The 500’s problem is that while they were mostly able carry over the original shape, with the increase in overall size handling any extreme weirdness in proportions, the original 500 was designed with as little extra flourish as possible, and the only bit of visual interest on the rear of the car were the vents for the engine, which is now in the front, and since putting vents on the hatch would be silly, we’re left with a rear end that has NO STYLING AT ALL outside of a pair of taillights.

I don't think much sheetmetal changed on the Traverse. I think it's just the old ones ass was too big for it's taillights.

thats the gist of it, its devoid of style, its a big old tarp of car with some lights tacked on.

The main problem, as with so many cars today, is the extremely high beltline. Bring the bottom edge of the rear window down close to the bottom of the emblem on the back and it would suddenly look a lot better.

The 500 also suffers from its proportions. While it may not be, the car looks taller than it is wide, which is bad joo-joo for any car in my eyes.

Bringing the rear window down would help, but it would loose its retro looks a little.

They changed more than I thought. Still, the basics principle is the same. They filled the vast empty wasteland between the hips.

I’m driving my wife’s car today and from the lower steer perspective it was bad, up in my Land Cruiser I wouldn’t have noticed as much.

Bring the whole beltline down with it to keep the styling itact and it’ll be fine. The original 500 wasn’t this stumpy either. I see why they did it, to make it an effective/stylish city car, but that doesn’t mean I’ll forgive it. I’d have seriously considered one if it was more practically sized for thr North American market.
